FrameReady can be used on single computer or in a network environment.
The requirements are different for each of these cases.
Running FrameReady on a single computer is very easy: install FileMaker Pro, install FrameReady, done!
For a single computer, there is no need to have a separate Server computer running FileMaker Server software.
FrameReady installed on computer (Windows/Mac).
FileMaker Pro installed on the same computer.
An internet connection (for Vendor Updates, sending messages, etc).
To use FrameReady on a network, you first need one computer running FrameReady with FileMaker Server.
The other Windows or Mac computers use FileMaker Pro, and an iPad uses FileMaker Go, to connect to FrameReady over the network.
One computer as the Server, capable of running FileMaker Server software, with FrameReady installed into FileMaker Server's database folder.
Your computer may need software/hardware upgrades in order to be compatible. For best performance, FileMaker Server should be run on a dedicated computer reserved for use as a server. See below for System Requirements.
An internet connection (for Vendor Updates, sending messages, etc).
A wired, local area network (for better performance than Wi-Fi).
FileMaker Pro installed on all Windows/Mac work station computers.
FileMaker Go installed on all iPad devices (if applicable) along with a Wi-Fi connection to your network.
Note: FrameReady Support is able to provide one (1) hour of limited multi-site networking assistance at no charge; anything beyond this time is charged at our hourly rate.
See: Remote Access
"The Cloud" refers to computers which are accessed, over an Internet connection, by multiple users for applications, data processing, and data storage.
When you use FrameReady and FileMaker Server at your location, you have effectively created your own private, local cloud that uses your local area network (LAN).
FrameReady was not built for use in the cloud unless you plan to use terminal services (remote desktop).
Your local area network (LAN) is typically much faster (10x or more) than a wide area network (WAN) and it is possible that all FrameReady computers will experience slower performance.
If many computers share your internet connection, then this approach may be a limiting factor.
So while using FrameReady in the cloud, such as AWS, would be slower compared to if using a server inside your own network, it is still usable.
You control how your data is secured and kept private
The speed of your Internet connection will not affect the speed of your local area network
No limits, caps or surcharges for bandwidth on your local area network
Internet outages will not force any downtime
Technical issues can be handled in-house
A dedicated computer is recommended for FileMaker Server.
It should have a 4-core CPU, 8GB RAM, and 80GB or more hard drive. A solid state drive (SSD) is recommended.
It does not need to be an industrial, "server grade" computer.
If you choose an Apple Mac, then it should be 2018 or newer.
If you use an Apple Macbook, then it must meet the System Requirements and connect using Ethernet (no Wi-fi).
FileMaker Server does not run in ordinary Windows, but requires the purchase of a special version of Windows called Windows Server 2019.
Notes:
• FileMaker Server cannot run on the familiar desktop versions of Windows, i.e. Windows 10 or Windows 8.1.
• There is a cost to purchase Windows Server 2019, it can be expensive and require a lot of IT setup and maintenance.
• Not all software is supported to run on Windows Server 2019, e.g. Adobe Photoshop CC.
• Installation of FileMaker Server is not always straight forward and may require multiple system updates, e.g. Microsoft .NET framework, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, etc.
FileMaker Server requires macOS Ventura 13.0, macOS Monterey 12.0, macOS Big Sur 11.0, or macOS Catalina 10.15
Notes:
• A Mac Mini is the best server option for multiple reasons. Windows Servers are very expensive and require a lot of maintenance. Going with the Mac Mini does not require a special operating system.
• The current standard Mac Mini that is regularly sold automatically has all of the system requirements needed to be a server. Cost wise, the Mac Mini works great with even a Windows-only workstation setup. Especially with how many additional software programs that will only run on Windows (such as CMC).
• The beauty of a Mac Mini as the server is that it can communicate with Windows computers with no problems or delays. No additional purchasing of the Windows Server 2019 is necessary. Once the Mac Mini as the server is set up (FileMaker Server program is provided for free with the Whiteglove Server/Upgrade cost of $199) then the Mac Mini will communicate to all the PCs using FrameReady, as FileMaker will be "speaking" to FileMaker.
Because of the purchase price for Microsoft Server, as well that not all Windows software is supported to run on it, we recommend using a recent (2018+) Mac Mini computer with your monitor, keyboard and mouse. The Mac's operating system is fully capable of running the FileMaker Server software.

An Internet connection is required to install FileMaker Server on Windows.
The FrameReady files are stored only on the Server computer.
When one of your guest computers requests data, the Server sends it out.
Install FileMaker Server software on the Server computer.
Install FileMaker Pro on the Server computer.
Configure the software and network settings.
Upgrade your FrameReady to the latest version.
This may require migrating any customizations to your new version.
Upload the FrameReady files to the Server for hosting.
Optionally set up a static IP address on the Server computer (so that remote computers can access FrameReady).
Open FileMaker Pro on guest computers and then open FrameReady.
A server is a dedicated computer that provides resources and data (in this case, your FrameReady program) to the other computers on your local network.
1) The server computer runs FileMaker Server.
2) The FileMaker Server hosts the FrameReady database files.
3) The guest computers open FileMaker Pro to use FrameReady.
We are able to provide FileMaker Server software to licensed FrameReady users, at no additional initial cost, for Mac and Windows.
✔ Improved FrameReady performance over your LAN able to support hundreds of users
✔ Built-in automatic backups which can be schedule hourly, daily, or weekly
✔ Create a security log file to track unauthorized access to your data
✔ Reduces the risk of damaged files
✔ Share data with more than five devices
✔ If you give your server a static internet (IP) address, you can access FrameReady off-site
Yes. Using FrameReady on any device (Windows, Mac, iPad) requires an active networking license.
You do not need FileMaker Server if you only use FrameReady on a single computer.
FrameReady is not built for use in the cloud unless you plan to use terminal services (remote desktop).
For the most part, yes. FileMaker Server for Mac computers is usable out-of-the-box; we often recommend a Mac Mini (with monitor, keyboard and mouse) for use as your server.
FileMaker Server for Windows, however, has stricter requirements, such as requiring Windows Server 2019 Standard Edition in order to run.
Note: Not all Windows software will run in Windows Server 2019.
Please see: System requirements
Provided that the existing server meets the System Requirements.
Note: Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 are not supported.
No. While using Terminal Services (remote desktop) used to be the case for using FileMaker Server, users can now directly use FileMaker Pro on their guest computers and no longer rely on remote desktop (terminal) services.
For best performance, FileMaker Server should be run on a dedicated computer reserved for use as a server.
However, you can use the "Open Remote" feature in FileMaker to open FrameReady, on the server, through the server.
Note: this is not considered a best practice. Claris, Inc. writes "On a FileMaker Server machine, use of FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Pro Advanced is for testing purposes only."
If other software causes the server computer to slow down or crash, then it will affect all connected computers (especially if the server computer must be rebooted).
If you obtain a static IP address for your modem/router and route it to the FileMaker Server by forwarding requests on port 5003 to the server computer, then you can open FrameReady remotely.
Performance will depend on the quality of the internet connection and the number of devices using it.
The FrameReady computer needs a Static IP Address (available from your internet service provider) in order for remote, off-site computers to locate and connect to it (because a static IP address does not change, it can be used to make a reliable network connection).
Additional network and router setup is required to make sure the static IP address is properly routed to the "Host" computer (this connects the static IP address in the outside world with the internal IP address of your host/server computer via port #5003).
The FrameReady Server computer must be powered on in order for other computers to open FrameReady. It is also recommended to disable system updates, hibernation/power savings, anti-virus software etc.
Note: FrameReady Support is able to provide one (1) hour of limited multi-site networking assistance at no charge; anything beyond this time is charged at our hourly rate.
In addition to the default backup folder, FileMaker Server allows you to specify a different folder. Network drives are not supported.
Your server computer should be set to automatically reboot when the power is restored. After booting up, the FileMaker Server can then restart and automatically check the integrity of the database files.
We recommend that you inspect and adjust the settings for any anti-virus, hibernation/sleep/power, software updates, etc.
Turn off indexing (Spotlight) for at least the FMS Data folder and all subfolders.
Disable other services such as email, VPN, TimeMachine, etc.
We also recommend that the server computer not be used as a guest computer/work station, for these same reasons.
Make sure all of your computers (Server and Guests) meet the System Requirements.
You need to install FileMaker Pro on all of your guest computers. A link can be sent to you in a separate email along with the installation license key and other information.
We can co-ordinate a date with you and the FileMaker specialist who will be performing, either:
a) the upgrade of both your FileMaker Server software and your FrameReady program. ($199)
b) the installation of your FileMaker Server software and moving your FrameReady program to the server computer. ($99)
Caution: when the server is installed in-house, and not using the FrameReady White Glove Service, if future issues arise with the server, Technical support fees are $150 per hour.
Any customizations you have had done in the past need to be manually recreated in the new FrameReady. There is be an additional cost for this. A quote for the work can be sent to you once you have identified which are required.
After the upgrade, a number of global fields will need to be reset. If you want to change any of them, now would be the time. There are new work order defaults for the Mat Design field and Extra field if you want to add a default entry in those.
